Our Board

Daniel Kim

President / Executive Director

Flintridge Preparatory School, CA

Class of 2027

Daniel helped found Matches for Minorities (501)(c)(3) after years of community involvement in bone marrow donor advocacy revealed the major disparities minority patients face in finding life saving donor matches. What began through local volunteer work in Los Angeles and exposure to stem cell transplantation following his grandfather's diagnosis, quickly grew into a larger mission centered on healthcare equity, donor accessibility, and representation within the transplant system. Since helping establish the organization, Daniel has worked to expand donor recruitment efforts across multiple states while building partnerships with national and international registries including DKMS, NMDP, Gift of Life, WMDP, and others. Alongside his nonprofit work, he conducts immunogenetics and stem cell transplant research through UCLA and USC Keck Medicine, focusing on donor selection, transplant outcomes, and healthcare disparities affecting underrepresented populations. Through Matches for Minorities, Daniel hopes to continue bridging research, advocacy, and community engagement to make donor access more equitable for patients everywhere.

Ellie Choi

Founder

Princeton University, NJ

Class of 2028

Ellie founded Matches for Minorities after her involvement with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and firsthand exposure to the life-changing impact of stem cell transplantation through donor-recipient meetings in her choir community. Inspired by the powerful stories of patients, families, and donors, she became committed to addressing the disparities that prevent many minority patients from finding compatible lifesaving matches. Since helping establish the organization, Ellie has supported initiatives to expand donor awareness, strengthen community outreach, and promote equitable access to the stem cell registry. As Matches for Minorities continues to grow, she hopes to inspire more individuals to become registered donors while helping build a more diverse and representative donor registry capable of giving every patient a greater chance at finding a cure.
