Changes through Legislation
Our Efforts
Part of M4M's mission is carried out through our efforts to make policy changes in the legislative system.
Our current focus is on the C.W. Bill Young Transplantation Program, a federally supported U.S. initiative that connects patients who have life-threatening blood cancers and disorders with volunteer stem cell and umbilical cord blood donors. This initiative has facilitated nearly 150,000 transplants for conditions like leukemia, lymphoma, and sickle cell amenia since 1987. This program is currently going through its periodic reauthorization that occurs every 5 years by Congress.
M4M has spoken to local house offices like Judy Chu, representing District 28, and Laura Friedman, representing Disctrict 30, to campaign for this program's passing. We have made an impact in lobbying and helping push this bill to be passed in the House of Representatives and we now await for Senate approval.
With Senate approval, $280 million in funding would be extended past the end of the 2026 fiscal year, allowing M4M and other stem cell registries to continue to operate and make a difference.

C.W. "Bill" Young (1930-2013) was an American politician who represented Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives for over four decades.
He was a strong advocate for medical research and minority communities in the National Bone Marrow Registry, leading him to champion what is now known as the C.W. Bill Young Transplantation program.
His efforts for change do not go unnoticed and we honor what he has done for stem cell donation.
